ThefirstwasthefaceinHarrietVanger’swindow.Thephotographhadaslightmotionblurandwasthusexcludedfromtheoriginalset.Thephotographerhadstoodonthechurchhillandsightedtowardsthebridge.Thebuildingswereinthebackground.Mikaelcroppedtheimagetoincludethewindowalone,andthenheexperimentedwithadjustingthecontrastandincreasingthesharpnessuntilheachievedwhathethoughtwasthebestqualityhecouldget.
Theresultwasagrainypicturewithaminimalgreyscalethatshowedacurtain,partofanarm,andadiffusehalf-moon-shapedfacealittlewayinsidetheroom.
ThefacewasnotHarrietVanger’s,whohadraven-blackhair,butapersonwithlighterhaircolour.
Itwasimpossibletodiscernclearfacialfeatures,buthewascertainitwasawoman;thelighterpartofthefacecontinueddowntoshoulderlevelandindicatedawoman’sflowinghair,andshewaswearinglight-colouredclothes.
